Green Home Improvement – Not Just For Treehuggers
Green home improvement is all about saving the planet right? Well, that is a big part of it, but here’s something you might not be aware of. Green home improvement is also a great way to save money. This post is all about what you can do to save a bit of extra cash while doing your part to save the planet. Needless to say we’ll be discussing both alternative sources of energy, but also ways to decrease your use of the sources you are using today. We’ll talk a bit about water and how spend less of that without even noticing and finally we’ll get into some of the bigger projects you can consider getting started with.
The Light Bulb Moment
Did you know that you can save hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars each year by making some minor changes to your home. In my home I’ve made it a point to replace all my old light bulbs with new energy efficient light bulbs. I really should do it all at once, but energy efficient light bulbs are more expensive than regular light bulbs. That’s why every time I have to replace a light bulb anyway I make sure to put in an energy efficient light bulb. That way I don’t have to replace all of them at once. What you need to remember is that although they are more expensive than regular light bulbs they also last longer and spend far less energy.
Talking About Spending Less
Our water supply is something we have to take care of as well. Even, if you don’t really care about the water supply I bet your care about your pocket. Water is costly as well these days. Installing low flow shower heads and faucets will automatically reduce the amount of water you are using. In addition to that it’s almost as easy to install as the light bulbs. With most of these shower heads you won’t even notice that you’re spending less water. This is another saving tip, next we’ll talk a bit about something that might potentially be a bit more expensive.
The Heat Is On
Did you know that you might be using more heat in your home than you need to? The truth is that if your home isn’t insulated correctly your home will be radiating heat. Well, all homes are radiating heat to some degree, but you want to minimize that radiation. What you should do is check with a professional to see if your home is insulated correctly. In the long run poor insulation can be a really costly affair. As home improvement projects go this one will probably be very expensive to fix, but 10 or 20 years from now it’s likely to save you money.
Extreme Green Home Improvement
If you really want to go all out there are plenty of home improvement projects you can consider. An obvious project would be installing solar panels. Solar panels are a great way to provide energy and heat for your home. In fact you might even be able to sell off excess energy to make a bit of cash. You can also look into ways to recycle rain water. The fact is there are many green home improvement projects that can both save the planet and be lucrative.
Ready To Hug Trees?
As you can see tree hugging might not be such a bad idea. The fact is that even if your main concern is your bank account thinking in green home improvement projects might not be a bad idea. Even if you decide to start with making small changes you might still be saving hundreds of dollars each year. I don’t know about you but I can think of several things I’d like to spend a couple of hundreds of dollars on.
