Low Cost Methods for Home Improvement

Home improvement is a perplexing task. You may need a huge amount of money for improving it and may have to go for a home loan or you may just manage it within a very low budget without looking for a loan.  Most likely, you may struggle for the second option and will like to refurbish home with minimum expense and try to get worth of every penny. There are a couple of economical methods you can use for improving your home and its market value.

Fiber cements sidings: These days fiber cement siding are more liked over vinyl sidings. These finer sidings have all characteristic of wood sidings without any flaws. These sidings have the additional benefits over wood or vinyl for home improvement. The fiber sidings are resistant to fire and pest. In addition, they have low maintenance cost and retain the paint for a longer period.

A composite deck: If you add up a composite deck in front of your hour house, you can get extra living area and it will add to the worth of your house.  Wood deck is simple and yields more returns as compared to other complex ways of decking. The maintenance cost may be a bit higher for wood decks, but initial costs are quite low.

Latest vinyl windows: You may be having old wooden windows in your house, which may rot fast. Setting in modern vinyl windows for home improvement will make the house look great and reduce your maintenance costs.

Renovating Kitchen: In any home improvement, the kitchen is the most important place that needs attention. Mostly the old wooden counters, drawers and cabinet door panels are to be replaced. Besides, many kitchen gadgets and accessories, taps or washbasin needs to be replaced with contemporary inexpensive stainless steel equipment. The granite counters are most preferred and are easy to maintain.

Converting Attic to Bedroom: The space in attic is least used. You can easily convert this place to a bedroom and increase your living space within. The most usual way is to convert the loft into a bedroom or into a master suite having cupboards and a bathroom

Landscaping: It can be an economical way to improve the appeal of your house in front and back lawn. You can provide a walkway in front with plants on sides. The backyard can have a grassy lawn, some plants and flowers and fencing. Make a driveway, if that is possible.

In nutshell, home improvement is a creative and innovative pursuit that needs a proper planning that will not cost you anything. If you use theses ideas you can renovate most of the important areas in you home economically and increase the market worth of your house and make it a more comfy and exciting dwelling.

The Logic and ABC of Motors and Pumps

No hot tub is complete without the motor and pump that make it run and work the way it does.

These are the parts that help make these hot tubs different from your ordinary tubs or pools of water that don’t give you that stress relieving and relaxing soak that hot tubs and spas give you.

Xaviera Arata Editor of the “Cheap Hot Tubs” website — http://www.CheapHotTubs.me — pointed out;

“…The choices in motors and pumps that you can use in your hot tubs and spas may be those that have been built into them or those that are actually replacement pumps for your hot tubs and spas…” Added Xaviera Arata

Why Its Important to Know Motors and Pumps

While you can choose your spa or hot tub according to its motor as well, there are times when the tub you choose doesn’t have the kind of pump or motor you want but the shape and size you desire. You can actually install a different pump or motor to your existing tub as long as you know the steps involved. There are a few different kinds of motors and pumps you can use to replace your existing hot tub or spa pump with and knowing the parts of these motors and pumps will further help you understand how it works and how to successfully replace or install them.

Common Motor and Pump Parts

The parts that you can find on tubs and their mechanisms include the wet ends, the motors, seals, impellers and a whole lot more. All these parts are important to the successful activation of your hot tub or spa. The pump wet end is the mechanism that is found at the end of your water pump and on this pump is where you find the impeller that sucks the water from the water source and pushes it into the tub with the force needed to create the jets that are for relaxation. A shaft seal is the seal that is used to help keep the water from going into the motor that keeps the pump going and your hot tub or spa running the way it should. There are a few seal kits available on the market and each seal kit and shaft seal is built to fit certain pump specifications to truly keep water out of the motor of your spa or hot tub. If you need to replace your spa’s shaft seal, you will need to know what your exact spa motor or pump is for you to be able to get the right one that will fit it and stop any leaks.

When Do You Need to Replace Them

A lot of people who have older tubs that have motors that are weaker than their present day counterparts often buy newer and stronger motors to replace the ones that they already have. This is usually when the tub they have is still in good working condition and in pretty good shape. If both the tub and the pump are in bad shape, it would probably be best if they got a newer model spa that comes with a new motor and pump rather than to simply buy a new motor for a rather beat up old spa or hot tub.

DIY Motors and Pumps

For those who are fond of building things from scratch or love doing DIY projects, they can actually find instructions on certain websites on the construction of such tubs as well as the installation of the pumps, motors, hoses and other necessary parts needed for the operation of the hot tubs. You can also find a wide array of pump motors for your spa at spa spare part websites in the different spa pump hp selections that you can choose from. Some of the pump motors that you can find include the .75 hp pump motors, the 1.0 and 1.5 hp pump motors and the bigger 2.0 hp pump motors. These pump motors can be bought in a wide array of motor brands and prices.

“…While you can actually replace your spa pump motor on your own with the use of a few easy steps that includes the replacement of the impeller as well and the removal of the wet end from the other motor parts, you can be better off with buying a completely new set that can last you longer that a self rebuilt pump motor…” Added Xaviera Arata

Is Green DIY Energy Worth Your Time and Energy?

Who the heck do the folks at greendiyenergy.com think they are? Yanking our chains, telling us we can eliminate our energy bills by building solar panels.

Making your own solar and wind power for less than $200

They sell a DIY green energy kit that shows you step-by-step how to build a solar power system or windmill for your home.

Here’s the truth:

Yes, it is a waste of time and energy, IF – and this is a very big IF! – you are not willing to put in some hard work and time. So if you aren’t much of a DIYer DO NOT BUY GREEN DIY ENERGY’S GUIDE! It will only be a waste of $50 for you; take a date to the movies or something with that $50 instead, because it will be money much better spent.

But, if you are willing to put in some good hard work for a day or two, well, not really that hard of physical labor, but it does take some time and energy to install the solar power system. It will probably take you a weekend, or a couple of people could work together to mount the solar energy system in one day.

If you are not very experienced with assembling solar panels and mounting them, then a good DIY guide will save you a TON of time and stress.  A good DIY solar panel guide will contain all the points below:

Multiple manuals: One for how to build a solar energy system, and the other for building a wind turbine.  That way, you don’t have to buy another guide if you choose to expand your energy system.  Most quality DIY guides will contain multiple manuals. DIY tutorial videos:  Most guides DO NOT contain tutorial videos, but I would definitely look for a guide that does offer tutorial videos, because they serve as great visual examples of what you’re supposed to be doing. Good customer service.  Unfortunately, no guides that I’ve reviewed have offered phone support, but most all have email support and one I found had an interactive customer forum as well. A money-back guarantee.  The good guides offer full money-back guarantees, so if you choose not to follow through with your solar panel plans, you will not have wasted $50, or however much you spent.
Making your own solar and wind power for less than $200

Green DIY Energy meets all this criteria, as well as Earth 4 Energy.  Those are, in my opinion, the best DIY solar panel guides available.  Their guides are legit, and you really will start saving money off of your monthly energy bill if you follow their clear directions.

Top 7 Mistakes Not to Make in Your Will – Financial Spectrum Financial Planners Sydney

Almost half of all Australians don’t have a will.  This is a big concern as it could leave many families and loved ones exposed to the stresses of managing a deceased estate without direction and not as effectively as possible.  Having a will is always better than not having one, however there are some common mistakes that you should be aware of that could make your will invalid.  Here are some tips of mistakes not to make in drawing up your will.

Tip 1: Is your will up to date and current?

Times change, relationships change, circumstances change.  A will that you wrote 7 years ago as a happy married person with no children isn’t going to be appropriate for you now when you’re divorced with 2 children.  You should update your will at least every 2 years to ensure that it stays up to date.  You should also update your will whenever there is a major family event such as a birth, death or a marriage.  A great way to help you remember to update your will regularly is to keep it with your tax receipts so that when you do your tax every year you will jog your memory to think about your will at the same time.

Tip 2: Is your Will appropriately witnessed?

If a will has not been signed or witnessed properly it can be rendered invalid.  Each state in Australia has slightly different rules about how wills need be signed and witnessed but as a general rule wills require 2 adult witnesses who are NOT potential beneficiaries or executors.

Tip 3: Is your Will in a place where it can be easily found?

If you passed away today, would your loved ones know where to find your will?  Make sure that you tell your family members where your will is located so that they are able to find it easily in the event of your death.  A will is no good to anybody if no one is able to find it!  Ideally, you should have several copies of your will in case any are lost or damaged.  The original should be stored in a secure place such as in a safe deposit box or with your lawyer.  You may also like to consider giving a copy to your chosen executor, your financial planner, and your accountant.

Tip 4: Have you included sentimental items in your will?

Make sure when you’re writing your will that you include specific instructions for items which may not necessarily have monetary value, but have sentimental value to your loved ones.  Often it is personal items such as photographs, jewellery and family heirlooms which cause the most strife in families where specific bequeasts have not been made.  To avoid family squabble, you should make a list of all your sentimental items and write specific bequeasts about to whom those tiems should be given.  Alternatively you can give provision in the will for beneficiaries to be able to choose between alternate items.

Tip 5: Is your chosen Executor appropriate?

Many people appoint Executors of their Will who are not suitable for the job.  When selecting someone for the role of Executor, you need to make sure that that person is someone who is responsible, trustworthy, and physically able to fulfill the role.  You need to consider things such as age and geographic location (e.g. an executor who lives overseas will find it difficult to fulfill their duties).  If you have someone in mind for the role, you should discuss it with them in advance to ensure that their happy to your Executor.  In addition you may like to consider appointing an independent person such as your lawyer to be a co-executor.

Tip 6: Should you use Do It Yourself DIY Will Kits?

Using a Do It Yourself DIY will kit is one of the most popular methods of writing a will in Australia.  However, unless your situation is very straightforward you should be aware that there are risks involved in writing your own will.  Often the wording of home-made wills can lend themselves to misinterpretation.  Many court cases about wills arise where people have used a DIY Will Kit and there is ambiguity.  The advantages of getting a will drawn up professionally is that you can limit the risk of the will containing anything which can be misconstrued and reduce the risk of someone contesting it.  Of course, having your will drawn up professionally is more costly but this cost would be small in comparison to the possible future cost of a court case.

Tip 7: Have you made your final wishes known?

Another issue which is a common source of family dispute are funeral arrangements.  If you have specific wishes about whether you want to be buried or cremated, or what type of service you want etc. then you should specify these in your will.  This avoids any family conflict by clearly stating your wishes.  In addition, if you would to be an organ donor, be sure to register on the Organ Donor Registry and discuss your wishes with your family.

How to Get Around With DIY Acoustic Treatment

If you’re still sacrificing your home made recordings and mixes because you think you don’t have the six-figure budget to come up with some basic sound treatment, think again! The most crucial forms of acoustic treatment are also the ones that are the least expensive to make. If you’ve set up a small recording area in your bedroom or in your home, there are some ways to improve the sound of the recording space as well as the way you listen to your music.

Choosing an appropriate space

If you haven’t dedicated a space just yet, it’s best to look for as large a space as your home or bedroom would allow. A larger space almost always guarantees better acoustic response than a tiny one because standing waves and early reflections are generally less (although still largely present if you don’t have any treatment). So to begin your project, look for a place where you can position your recording equipment or computer in the middle of the room so that sound bounces off the side walls at the same time with its trajectory. Once you’ve done this, set up your rig as you see fit.

Determining the best listening position

It’s always a good idea to experiment with the best mix listening position in any environment, but a good rule of thumb is to keep your head at a position that allows it to form a triangle with the tweeters of your studio monitors. Keep your monitors as far as possible from the back wall. Mark this position with duct tape on the floor, and try moving around it to hear the differences in phase that each position gives.

Place absorbers on the walls

A great tip to learn where to place your room absorbers is to take a mirror and run it to the wall opposite your studio monitors: whenever the mirror reflects the image of your monitors, mark it. Do it for all 3 walls (even your ceiling, if you can) because these are places where a direct transmission of sound will go. Place your sound absorbers at these positions to get their maximum benefit. Note that you don’t necessarily have to place absorbers on every square inch of your home studio walls unless this is the room response that you’re looking for.

Figure in the bass traps

The absorbers will take care of the mid and high frequencies, but these aren’t enough to create a neutral sounding space. Low frequencies are especially hard to tame because of their intense energy and capacity to creep between floors. The best way to treat bass frequencies is to place bass traps at the corners of your studio space (preferably from floor to ceiling) as well as places where the room’s walls meet the ceiling (as these are essentially horizontal corners). Treating your room for low frequency absorption is one of the best ways you can get a neutral sounding room and should not be overlooked.

Once these are in place, you’ve got a functional working space for your music. Consider some more advanced forms of treatment such as RPG diffusers and perhaps even some professional products as your budget will allow.

Measuring the Success of a DIY Home Improvement Project

Gauging your success

How does one gauge the success of a do it yourself home improvement project? What level of expectations should we have upon their completion?

For a good many people, evaluation of a DIY home improvement project is out of the question. There is a general misconception that once a DIY project is done, it’s done. No need to further evaluate whether the project was really a success or not. The need to evaluate the success of a DIY project has two main goals:

• Establish whether the project had been executed according to plan.

• Establish whether you’re improving as compared to previous different projects that you have done before.

The criteria

1. Cost- how does one evaluate the true cost of a DIY project? Start with the basic raw materials. A central blueprint for any DIY project should have a list of the materials for the completion of a project. If the cost of the finished product and the projected cost of the project do not match, then this should be avoided in the future. A disparity of 25% from the actual cost can be acceptable.

The point of a DIY home improvement project is to basically save money. Saving money entails sticking to a budget- which has already been computed to be cheaper than actually hiring or buying finished goods.

In some rare instances, central plans have wrong computations- this is fine, as long as effort is given to remedy this problem in the future.

2. Finished product- whether you’re replacing floor boards or making a rocking chair, one particular consideration would be the finished product itself. Simply put, does it look good?

Of course, do not expect that a hand-made cabinet made with spare wood found in the garage can look as attractive as the ones you buy from a furniture store or a factory outlet. But at least, the finished product should look decent, in combination with other pieces of furniture in your home.

This criterion is especially important when you plan to make large-scale DIY home improvement projects, such as replacing walls or parts of the roof. Once you’re done, indeed, you’re done.

3. Timeframe- one thing should be made clear when we talk about DIY home improvement project timeframe: time does count. This issu can be discounted if you have a lot of free time in your hand: for instance, summer vacation or the like. But if you’re doing the DIY project on weekends, you have to make sure that you’re completing the phases of the project on time.

The reason for this criterion is that time is money when you think about it. If you spend three months creating a cabinet no bigger than a child’s table, then there is definitely something wrong with the project. Laziness should be eliminated in the picture- you can’t simply reason that you’ve been lazy. What would be the function of timeframe then?

Timeframe can vary from project to project. Try your best by sticking to a limited timeframe; indeed this will have its reward in later DIY projects. You can call it GOAL Setting.

Electronic Data Interchange

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)

Electronic data interchange (EDI) is the electronic exchange of business information—purchase orders, invoices, bills of lading, inventory data and various types of confirmations—between organizations or trading partners in standardized formats. EDI also is used within individual organizations to transfer data between different divisions or departments, including finance, purchasing and shipping. When the focus of EDI centers on payments, especially between banks and companies, the term financial EDI (FEDI) is sometimes used. Along with digital currency, electronic catalogs, intranets and extranets, EDI is a major cornerstone of e-commerce overall.

Two characteristics set EDI apart from other ways of exchanging information. First, EDI only involves business-to-business transactions; individual consumers do not directly use EDI to purchase goods or services. Secondly, EDI involves transactions between computers or databases, not individuals. Therefore, individuals sending e-mail messages or sharing files over a network does not constitute EDI.

While the concept of e-commerce did not receive widespread attention until the 1990s, large companies have been using EDI since the 1960s. The railroad industry was among the first to adopt EDI, followed by other players in the transportation industry. By the early 1980s, EDI was being used by companies in many different industry sectors. In the beginning, companies using EDI transferred information to one another on magnetic tape via mail or courier, which had many drawbacks including long lead times and the potential for a tape to be damaged in transit. During the 1980s, telecommunications emerged as the preferred vehicle for transferring information via EDI.

By the new millennium, EDI was used widely in many industries including manufacturing, finance, and retail. Some large retailers, among them Sears and Target, required suppliers to use EDI in order to engage in business transactions with them. Additionally, the Federal Acquisition Streamlining Act of 1994 (FASA) required all agencies within the United States government to use EDI.

Communication Methods.

After identifying trading partners, entering into TPAs with them and purchasing the necessary hardware and software, a means of communication must be chosen. EDI can occur point-to-point, where organizations communicate directly with one another over a private network; via the Internet (also known as open EDI); and most commonly, via value-added networks (VANs) provided by third-party value-added-network services.

VANs are networks dedicated exclusively to EDI. Not only do they function like telephone lines by allowing for the transfer of information, they also contain storage areas, similar to e-mail boxes, where data sent from one party can be held until it is scheduled to be delivered to the receiver. VANs are able to provide translation services to small organizations that find it too cost prohibitive to do in-house with their own software. Companies may need to join more than one VAN because their partners belong to more than one. However, by the early 2000s most VANS were able to communicate with one another.

In addition to translation, VANs offer a wide variety of other services including data backup, report generation, technical support, training, and the issuance of warnings if data is not properly transmitted between parties. Depending on need, all of the services offered by a VAN may not be required by a particular company. VANs vary in the way they charge companies. Some charge high implementation or setup fees followed by low monthly usage fees, or vice versa. Charges often are made based on the number of documents or characters involved in a given transmission. For example, one EDI provider charged its clients a monthly mailbox fee of $17.50, followed by a charge of 30 cents per 1,024 characters (per kilo character or k/char) transmitted. Additionally, charges can vary depending on participants’ phone companies and the time of day when transactions are made. It can be less expensive for companies to make transactions during off-peak or evening hours.

In the early 2000s, although many companies still relied on VANs, the Internet was playing a larger role in EDI. It is possible for companies to translate EDI files and send them to another company’s computer system over the Internet, via e-mail or file transfer protocol (FTP). Because it is an open network and access is not terribly expensive, using the Internet for EDI can be more cost effective for companies with limited means. It has the potential to provide them with access to large companies who continue to rely on large, traditional EDI systems. The low cost associated with open EDI also means that more companies are likely to participate. This is important because the level of value for participants often increases along with their number. However, this also presents a dilemma for large companies who have invested a considerable sum in traditional EDI systems. Furthermore, Internet service providers (ISPs) usually do not offer the kinds of EDI-specific services provided by VANs.

While the automotive and retail industries have experimented with open EDI for some time, the efforts didn’t result in widespread adoption by small suppliers, usually due to cumbersome requirements like the installation of on-site software. Incorporating EDI into e-marketplaces was an approach that held more potential. In March 2000, an e-marketplace called the WorldWide Retail Exchange (WWRE) was established. It allowed suppliers and retails in various industry sectors—including retail, general merchandise, food and drugstores—to conduct transactions over the World Wide Web. After one year of operation, the WWRE had 53 retailer members with combined annual turnover of $722 billion. Leading retailers, among them Kmart, Rite Aid, Best Buy, and Target, planned to offer a Web-to-EDI translation service on WWRE so it would be easier for smaller suppliers to do business with them. In this arrangement, the retailers send purchase orders to a data center where they are translated to a language that can be read with a Web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. Suppliers are then notified about the PO and allowed to respond. This is a break from true EDI, since orders are handled manually by suppliers.

In addition to the Internet, intranets (private internets) and extranets (links between intranets and the Internet) also showed potential for EDI. According to The International Handbook of Electronic Commerce, “The Extranet makes it possible to connect several organizations behind virtual firewalls. For example, suppliers, distributors, contractors, customers, and trusted others outside the organization can benefit from establishing an Extranet. The Internet is used to provide access to the public; the Intranet serves the internal business; Extranets provide a critical link between these two extremes. Extranets are where the majority of business activity occurs. They enable commerce through the Web at a very low cost and allow companies to maintain one-to-one relationships with their customers, members staff and others.”

Communication Standards.

As previously mentioned, when companies use EDI to exchange information, translation software is an important part of the process. During EDI, information is usually translated to and from one of several different standard languages, including ANSI X12 and EDIFACT. These languages are more flexible than custom standards developed by individual companies for their specific use.

Because of its reliability and flexibility, ANSI X12 was the most widely used North American standard in the early 2000s. Also called ASC X12, ANSI X12 was developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), which administrates and coordinates voluntary industry standardization within the United States. In addition to its prevelance in North America, this standard also was used in Australia and New Zealand.

Created in 1987 with the cooperation of the United Nations, Electronic Data Interchange For Administration Commerce and Transport (EDIFACT) standards combine the best aspects of ANSI X12 and a standard known as United Nations Guidelines for Trade Data Interchange (UNTDI). Because it is so universal, EDIFACT is suited for use in international EDI. Although EDIFACT was becoming increasingly popular in the early 2000s, it lacked the comprehensiveness of ANSI X12.

In addition to ANSI X12 and EDIFACT, other EDI standards also exist, including Global EDI Guidelines for Retail (GEDI), used within North America for international trade; the grocery industry’s Uniform Communication Standard (UCS); Voluntary Inter-Industry Commerce Standards (VISC), used by retailers of general merchandise; Warehouse Information Network Standard (WINS), used by public ware-houses; TRADACOMS, created by the Article Numbering Association and used by retailers in the United Kingdom; and NACHA, developed by the National Automated Clearing House Association and used for transactions in the banking industry. For companies using open EDI, a language called extensible markup language (XML), similar in some respects to hypertext markup language (HTML), allows users to share information in a universal, standard fashion without making the kinds of special arrangements EDI often requires and regardless of the software program in which it was originally created.

How Edi Works

During EDI, information is sent from one participant’s computer system and translated to a standard format with special translation software. It is then transmitted to another participant, translated back from the standard format into a format used by the receiver and entered into the receiver’s computer system. Thus, EDI allows participants to transfer information between their respective computer systems, even if the systems utilize different, incompatible platforms.

Before using EDI, companies usually enter into specific agreements with their trading partners (called trading partner agreements or TPAs). These contracts often spell out the kinds of information they will exchange and how they will exchange it. Because entering into and terminating TPAs is expensive and time consuming, traditional EDI isn’t always ideal for companies who change suppliers often, or for companies who frequently enter into temporary relationships with suppliers or other companies.

Why EDI?

· EDI comes into its own when repetitive manual tasks are required to support a business relationship; Electronic data interchange simply eradicates them by automating the process and removing the paperwork element.

· It increases accuracy by eliminating the re-keying of data and the quality of data is enhanced by agreeing product codes, prices and location codes in advance.

· Electronic data interchange also helps cement customer/supplier partnerships by reducing the supply chain costs associated with manual processing.

· EDI enabled suppliers are cheaper and easier to deal with.

Advantages of EDI

Companies use EDI to exchange information for a variety of different reasons, mainly increased efficiency and cost savings. For example, EDI allows business transactions to occur in less time and with fewer errors than do traditional, paper-based means. It reduces the amount of inventory companies must invest in by closely tying manufacturing to actual demand, allowing for just-in-time delivery. By doing away with paper forms, EDI also reduces postage costs and the expenses and space considerations involved in paper-based record storage. Some companies have seen dramatic improvements in their business processes, such as the shortening of delivery times from days to hours. However, other EDI users have continued to experience snags. In Planet IT, Procter & Gamble, a leading packaged goods manufacturer, reported that it found errors in more than 30 percent of its electronic orders, although these were mainly due to human mistakes.

Although many companies don’t view EDI as a strategic weapon, it certainly can be used as one. Having the capability to engage in EDI is a marketing tool, because it makes suppliers attractive to retailers and other companies who buy goods and services. In a situation where several suppliers offer similar products, being EDI-enabled can be an important differential. EDI also can be used to form alliances between companies that provide advantages over competitors in several ways, including the ability to offer the lowest market prices and the best customer service. Such alliances also can lead to newer or more innovative services.

Five key benefits of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)

The benefit of electronic trading is well documented. Here are the top five reasons why businesses adopt EDI.

Benefit One: Remove document re-keying

By removing the manual keying of key business documents such as Orders, Invoices, Acknowledgments and Despatch Notes your company can benefit significantly by::

· Reduced labour costs

· Elimination of human keying errors

· Faster document processing

· Instant document retrieval

· Remove reliance on the postal service

Benefit Two: Eliminate Paper

Paper-based trading relationships have some inherent disadvantages when compared with their electronic trading equivalents:

· Stationery and printer consumable costs

· Document storage costs

· Lost documents

· Postage costs

Benefit Three: Reduce lead times and stockholding

· Electronic trading documents can be delivered far more quickly than their paper counterparts, thus the turnaround time from order to delivery can be reduced.

· By using EDI for forecasting and planning, companies are able to get forward warning of likely orders and to plan their production and stock levels accordingly.

· Companies receiving advanced shipping notes or acknowledgments know in advance what is actually going to be delivered, and are made aware of shortages so alternate supplies can be sourced.

· Integrating electronic documents means they can be processed much faster, again reducing lead times and speeding up payments.

Benefit Four: Increase quality of the trading relationship

· Electronic trading documents when printed are much easier to read than copies faxed or generated on multi-part stationery by impact printers.

· Accurate documents help ensure accurate supplies.

· Batches of electronic documents are usually sequentially numbered, therefore missing documents can easily be identified, not causing companies to wade through piles of paper.

Benefit Five: Competitive Edge

Because electronic data interchange (EDI) makes you attractive to deal with from your customers’ point of view, and you are in their eyes cheaper and more efficient to deal with than a competitor trading on paper, your costs will be lower because you will require less manpower to process orders, deliveries or payments.

It is no accident that the leading UK retailers all rely on EDI for placing orders and receiving invoices – they know the benefits they get and the costs that can be saved.

The drawbacks of EDI

Significant costs are associated with implementing and operating EDI systems. This is because solutions available in the market must be adjusted to a company’s own needs and employees must be trained. In addition, a pilot phase or an initial parallel operation is frequently necessary. The result is that small and mid-sized companies in particular avoid EDI and rely on traditional forms of data transmission instead.

Furthermore, processes in a company must undergo significant changes before EDI can be applied. For instance, a company may normally receive its goods before an invoice is sent in the mail. But if EDI were used, the invoice would arrive before the goods were delivered. Accordingly, processes must be adjusted in such a way that invoices can be processed by the company before the goods have arrived.

Security Issues

The paper checks and balances that exist within the clerical world are not possible with EDI. While rare, the possibility that data will be intercepted and stolen or altered in transit does exist. Messages also may be deliberately or mistakenly duplicated. This can result in overcharges, wasted resources, and damaged relations between trading partners. For these and other reasons, companies take measures to ensure accuracy and security, including security policies that limit the authority to engage in transactions to certain individuals; means of verifying that messages sent were received intact (electronic “seals”); the use of proper encryption methods; digital signatures or bio-metrics (the use of human attributes like fingerprints or voice) to verify the identity of senders and receivers; audits that verify the accuracy of electronic records; efforts to ensure that translation software has been written correctly and not altered; and so on.

Past, Present and Future of EDI

· EDI began in earnest over 20 years ago and is now used by over 20,000 UK companies.

· It is most commonly used by the UK retail sector, typically in Grocery, Catering, Building & DIY, Publishing, Stationery and Department Store sectors.

· EDI can also be found supporting business supply chains in a vast spectrum of other industries ranging from Electronics to Motor Manufacturers, and Pharmaceutical Supply to the Inland Revenue. There are no barriers to the use of electronic data interchange in any industry.

· The expansion has been driven by major clients insisting that suppliers adopt electronic data interchange (EDI) to reduce overhead costs, thereby helping to enhance the on-going competitiveness of their business.

· Widely used across Europe, North America and the rest of the world, EDI is actively encouraged by European Governments using United Nation’s EDI standards to facilitate cross border trading.

EDI is expected to grow with business-to-business e-commerce overall, a sector that was growing quickly in the early 2000s. In 2000 alone, business-to-business sales were estimated to be $3.3 trillion, with forecasts predicting an increase to $5.2 trillion by 2004, according to Corporate EFT Report. The Gartner Group forecast sales in this sector to be even higher, reaching $7.29 trillion by 2004. The use of EDI also is expected to grow along with international trade agreements like the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

According to Corporate EFT Report, in the early 2000s the lines between EDI and other Internet channels—including hybrid EDI/Internet electronic trading networks, Internet e-marketplaces, extranets, Internet company-to-company links, and private emarkets—were beginning to blur, and companies were relying on a variety of channels to conduct business with suppliers, depending on the nature of their business goals.

In a Planet IT article, David Yockelson provided a similar snapshot of EDI in the early 2000s, as well as a glimpse at the road ahead: “VANs haven’t gone away, but the demands of businesses and their trading partners have changed dramatically. Internet-based transport, broader and more robust sets of information and real-time connectivity are just a few of the items that have been appended to the connectivity wish lists of most companies. Moreover, the basic language of data movement has suddenly become XML, despite the presence of decades-old EDI standards. VANs aren’t dead. EDI isn’t going away any time soon. And XML, while incredibly exciting as an application and data-neutralizing standard, is in its infancy.”

Diy Green Energy Guides – Choosing The Right Solar Panel Or Wind Turbine Website

“Going Green” is on just about everyone’s mind now days.   Many of us have jumped on board and are doing everything we can to help the revolution. Many have started the boarding process and are doing a little at a time and others are just starting out.  No matter which step you are at, the key to success is doing your research.  As most of us have heard before “knowledge is power.”  And in the case of “going green” we are literally talking about power, or at least the amount of it we use and where we get it from.

The internet is absolutely bombarded with companies and advertisements concerning the green revolution.  Many of these companies are very legitimate and are truly taking steps to help mother earth, while others are simply trying to capitalize on the movement.  You can literally find hundreds or thousands of “green” products out there for sale, everything from rain collection barrels to solar lighting for your walkway.  In this article we are going to discuss do-it-yourself solar panels and wind turbines.  Due to a few advances in the industry over the past few years it has become very inexpensive to actually build your own systems and literally power your complete home from these systems, in effect never having to pay the power companies again.  Because of these advances and the ability to build inexpensive systems there has been a boom of internet websites promoting the practice.

These “Green Energy” websites are capitalizing on the green diy movement by offering books or guides that teach individuals how to build these power systems themselves.  Most advertise that you can build your own solar panel or wind turbine for under $200.  If you perform a Google search for “diy solar panels” or even just “solar panels” alone, you will find hundreds of sites offering these guides.  So many in fact that it becomes overwhelming to weed through them.  We are about to give you some pointers as to how to choose the right ones.

We literally scanned and read through dozens of these green energy websites.  What we found was that most of them are offering the same information just packaged in different brightly colored packages.  All of the websites sell what is known as an eBook.  This is an electronic book that you download from their website, usually in .pdf format.  There are a few things you should look at when evaluating which of these sites to trust and possibly purchase your guide from.

-          First and probably most important is to look at their Money Back offer.  Do they offer a truly risk-free guarantee?  Make sure you read the fine print to ensure there isn’t a catch.

-          Second, do you get other items as well as your diy guide?  Most offer tax savings info, parts guides and other bonus information.

-          Next, do you get to download the information directly after you make your purchase, or do you have to wait for someone to respond to you?

-          Try out their customer service.  Send them an email to ask a question and see how long it takes to get a reply.

-          Does the site look like a copy of all the other sites you’ve seen, or does it look original?

-          Do their videos appear professionally made, clear and can you hear the audio well?

These are just a few of the items you can use to verify the validity of the sites you are looking at.  One review site that exist out there is MySolarReview.com which has taken most of the guess work out of the equation for you by providing reviews of 6 of the top DIY Green Energy sites.

Simply make sure you do a little research before you decide which DIY website to purchase your guide from.  Make sure the one you choose will provide you with as much info as possilbe for your money.  There are several review sites out there to help with your decision.

Great Tasting DIY Travel Latte

Traveling with a portable latte making kit probably seems crazy, but to those of us for whom quality caffeine consumption equals joy and functionality it’s something to consider.

I live near Seattle and for years suffered quality coffee depravation (QCD) when traveling. Those great espresso shops that manage to survive on every block in the Northwest and the San Francisco Bay area quickly thin to nothing in other parts of the country, and except for bastions of coffee enlightenment like France and Italy may be impossible to find elsewhere in the world. Certainly, other parts of the world have long coffee traditions but their coffee is generally a different drink entirely, and alien to the palette.

The attempt by Starbucks to spread through the known universe has made the situation somewhat easier, introducing decent coffee into many nooks and crannies, but Starbucks is not yet ubiquitous, nor is it generally available in room.

For years my solution was to travel with quality tea. Tea can be quite good. Tea satisfies caffeine cravings. And, quality tea offers a subtle complexity that soothes the soul. However, tea is not coffee, and when I want that coffee intensity, nothing else will do.

Forget those in-room coffee makers that hotels and motels offer. The pre-packaged, weak and bitter brew they produce is nothing more than a caffeine fix. It wakes the body but brings no joy. Fine hotels generally serve quality coffee but the extra cost of the room is a high, high price to pay for a decent cup of coffee. What to do?

Fortunately, with some simple and relatively portable and inexpensive equipment, along with a microwave oven, now common in lodgings, it is possible to create a more than passable imitation of the coffee house classic. Here’s what you’ll need.

A portable coffee brewer. For years I used a plastic press pot also called a French press. Glass is nicer but is too fragile to travel with. That’s the simplest solution. Bring your own coffee, unfortunately pre-ground, but you can’t have everything. Zap a cup of water in the microwave and a couple of minutes later you have redemption.

The press pot has been replaced in my kit by a device called an AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker. The AeroPress looks like a hypodermic designed for a dinosaur. Instead of a needle, though, the coffee maker has a perforated flat end that holds a coffee filter. The AeroPress has one real advantage over a traditional press pot. It’s much easier and less messy to clean. And the coffee it makes is more like an espresso shot, tasting quit different from the brew the press pot produces. Both are good. They’re just different.

The AeroPress is the better choice for making coffee for a latte. One possible down side of the AeroPress is that it takes some effort to press the plunger down. Pushing slowly helps but it may be more force than some are capable of using. It is not friendly to arthritic joints or smaller people.

Operation is simple. With filter in place, measure coffee into the tube. Place the maker over a coffee cup. Pour hot water in the tube, stir, wait 20 seconds and insert the plunger. Push it down to extract the coffee. The resulting brew is concentrated, not quite as much so as a shot of espresso but nearly so.

If you simply want a coffee, add hot water to desired strength, sweeten or lighten and enjoy. If you love lattes then you need another piece of equipment, a frother.

The simplest way to make foam is to pour 2/3 of a cup of cold milk into a sealable and microwavable container. A hard plastic travel mug with a tight lid works great, as does a pint or half liter Nalgen bottle. When the milk, make sure that it’s cold, is sealed in, shake the thing for about 30 seconds. Remove the lid and microwave for about 20 seconds to set the foam. Either pour the foamed milk into a cup and add the coffee or pour the coffee directly into the travel mug. Instant, low-tech latte.

Non-fat milk works best but has little flavor. 2% milk is a good compromise between foam and flavor. Whole milk is not friendly to cold frothing. Again, make sure the milk is cold when you start. Warm milk won’t foam.

The shake and bake method makes foam but it isn’t the micro-bubble foam you’d get from an espresso machine. That may be good enough for you. If it’s not, never fear, there are portable frothers that do a better job than many home espresso makers and are light and small enough to pack. The most traveler friendly ones are battery powered mixers. Aerolatte makes a couple of models that come with hard plastic travel cases and run on two AA batteries.

Again, start with cold milk. Insert the frother and mix until you get a good foam. You will need a container with at least twice the volume of the milk you initially pour in. For hot foam, make sure that it is microwavable. No stainless allowed. Once you have whipped your foam into shape, microwave for 10 – 20 seconds, depending on how hot you want your drink. Be careful to not overheat the milk as that will collapse the bubbles. Combine the foamed milk with the coffee. Enjoy.

The motorized frother will actually make stiff enough foam to do a decent cappuccino, while the shake and bake method is only suitable for lattes.

Diy Alternative Home Energy Projects

Alternative (or renewable) energy is catching on in the home building and home improvement industries. And now we are seeing a rise in DIY projects too. It is good to know that we as individuals can take part in preserving our planet for generations to come.

There are three primary sources of alternative energy that can be adapted to just about any home. They are easy, inexpensive and profitable. Making them great DIY projects.

The first system is WIND POWER.

This is not a new concept, and now it is becoming more available to the “do it yourselfer”. Wind power is produced by using wind generators to harness the kinetic energy of the wind. Wind power is gaining world wide popularity as a large scale energy source. By investing in a small wind system, you can reduce air pollution. A well designed home wind energy system will provide you with years of cost effective, clean and reliable electricity.

Commercial systems are nice, but a DYI kit is about a quarter of the price. And the satisfaction you’ll get from building it yourself can not be measured! One of the most important considerations for a windmill is location.you need a location free of obstacles. The windmill must be high enough to catch optimal wind. It can be built from the ground up or anchored to a building.

SOLAR POWER

Solar power is energy that comes from the sun. All energy on this planet, at its very source, comes from the sun. Although solar energy can be collected in many different ways to generate electricity,the most common method for the homeowner is the solar panel (or photo voltaic panel). The mechanics of the solar panel can be pretty technical. Basically, when sunlight hits the solar cell material, the light creates an electron and hole pair. The electron and hole go in opposite directions, and this creates voltage. Voltage is the energy needed to power appliances, lights etc.

Making and installing a do it yourself solar panel system is about the easiest alternative energy project you can take on. Once you build one panel, you will see that it is very easy to scale up your energy generation by just building additional panels. Generate as much electricity as you need. Then you can sell any excess electricity back to the utility company.

MAGNETIC GENERATORS

Now you can generate your own electricity! Magnetic generators are amazing. Never again will you worry about your electric bill. The magnetic generator runs on perpetual motion.This technology is not really new, but it is very new to the general public. Since there is no need for any fuel, this is a very clean source of energy. The magnets provide perpetual motion which keeps the generator running 24/7. These generators are small and do not emit smoke or any other by products. So they can be conveniently installed in a basement. Plans for magnetic generators have recently emerged on the internet in the form of eBooks. These eBooks provide you with concise step by step instructions. The materials needed can be found at your local home center. It is easy and inexpensive for DIY techs of all levels.

Can A Xbox 360 Diy Fix Work For You?

Fortunately, like all problems, the ones that occur on the Xbox 360 comes with its own solutions. These can easily be provided by an experienced technician who possesses an extensive knowledge of how the Xbox 360 works. However, these usually requires taking your gaming console back to the store where it was bought and leaving it there to be repaired, This is quite ok except that it usually take a long time before it can be returned. This can prove to be very inconvenient especially when it has already been more than two weeks and your console is still not back within your hands.

These can be avoided by making use of another alternative that is also said to be effective and at the same time quick and easy. Also, this can be done in the comforts of the home and requires only the basic knowledge about electronics and computer systems as well as basic tools and equipment. Lastly, you will not experience the discomfort of waiting as well as be able to supervise the process yourself. This said alternative involves learning how to do an Xbox 360 diy fix.

The first step in doing an Xbox 360 diy fix is to know the problem and all of its possible causes. This involves keen observations skills as you will need to know some of the possible signs and processes that come with each type of problems. Also, you need to know the difference between the different types of problem signs as some signs can be attributed to many different kinds of problems. One example of this is when the Xbox 360 console begins showing unreadable disks. These can be either related to a power failure or a hardware problem. Knowing all the possible relationships between the different types of problem signs is very crucial in the doing a very effective Xbox 360 diy fix.

Once the problem and it causes are known and identified, the next step in an Xbox 360 diy fix is to look for all possible solutions that can be used to solve the problem. Searching online is quite recommended as the net offers a wide variety of sites that can offer a list of possible Xbox 360 problems together with the corresponding solutions. Afterwards, a process of elimination is applied to help in choosing the solution that will work best for the problem that is specified. To make choosing a solution faster, it’s good to disregard those that offer senseless steps and advices. Instead, try to look for the solutions that has been tested and proven or has been used successfully by many people.

Lastly, the steps for the chosen solution must be followed precisely and correctly in order for your Xbox 360 diy fix to be complete. This can be determined once the problem has disappeared and the gaming console is now working again properly.

Important Characteristics of a Good Business Logo Design

A business logo has much more to do than simply sitting pretty. A logo has an important functional purpose in the running of a business. Some of the most important functions of a business logo are as follows:

* It establishes your brand

* It promotes your business in the market

* It gives your business an unmistakably unique identity

* It makes your business credible

A good business logo design is an effective tool in creating and sustaining the good impression of your business. That is why many big business houses spend a considerable amount of time, effort and money – invaluable resources – on their logo. They then follow it up by using their logo effectively on all their print and web media. Each and every marketing strategy portrays their logo in proud prominence, so that people successfully associate the logo with the company and its philosophy.

To be effective, your business logo design must have certain vital characteristics. These are:

Aesthetic appeal: Your logo should be eye catching, in the right sort of way. Ornate elaborate designs may look beautiful and may fulfill your deepest desires, but they may not ‘click’ with your customers. Use simple color palettes, easy-to-read fonts and short readable texts. Professional logos never look unnecessarily flamboyant.

Philosophical tenor: Your business logo must reflect your business philosophy as closely as possible. For example, if you are in the business of entertainment, your logo could look funky, tantalizing even. But, if you are into mortgage or home loans, you need a highly corporate look.

Scalable: Once you choose a logo, you will need it to grace each and every surface that belongs to your business. You will require it on stationery, web media and even on your products. So, you need the logo design to be scalable, so it can be stretched or shrunk to fit whatever surface or dimension you choose. For this to happen, the design process has to make use of certain design characteristics. Otherwise, stretching a logo will make it look grainy or unnatural. This is also the reason why DIY logo design software or readymade clipart is not a good idea.

Cost: Many small and individual businesses already have to deal with huge overhead costs. Thus they may try to scrimp and save on matters that do not look very important. However, most of them live to tell of how they sorry they are about their decision to bypass a good design for a cheap, DIY design. On the other hand, when you are fighting desperately to start your business, spending thousands of dollars on a piece of design is rather extravagant. Thus, a good business logo design must be cost effective while being highly professional.

Time effective: Many design agencies that charge you an arm and a leg for their unique, customized designs take their own sweet time creating the logo. This means you will be wasting valuable business resources while you wait for the logo to be ready. Professional businesses that need to start in a time bound manner should be able to procure a professional design in the shortest span of time.

Customization: Finally, any logo you select will require some amount of tweaking. A line here, a letter there – it always happens. The business logo design company you choose should allow you to customize your design to whatever degree you desire.

Pixellogo offers professional Business Logo Design services including logo templates, 3D logos and web design for companies at an affordable price.

Six Easy DIY Steps

Six Easy Steps to Becoming a

Genuine Mr. or Ms. Fix-it

Lesson one:

It’s never a good time for things to go “clunk…” in the night, but, they do.  The costs of living: gasoline, groceries and utilities have risen dramatically.  Service calls are unbelievably high.   During this recession keeping the money in our pocket, and our house in good running order, has never been so important.

Our disposable income is shrinking rapidly.  Job security is a thing of the past.  If ever there was a time when the average homeowner needed to learn how to “Fix-it” and reduce costs; it is now.

There are three basic components to every house which are: mechanical, electrical or hydraulic (plumbing) in nature.  Understanding the mechanical, electrical and plumbing around your home is a major key to keeping your costs low.   Contrary to popular belief, it is not at all difficult and you actually save thousands of dollars by doing the work yourself.

It is always less expensive for you to make repairs around the house.  Example: The wall switch stops working.  A quality UL listed single pole switch will cost you between three and five dollars at your local home and garden center.  However, hiring a licensed electrician to install that $3.00 switch can run anywhere from $125.00 to $150.00.  Save yourself a lot of money.  For only ten minutes of your time you can install the switch yourself.  It’s legal, it’s clean, it’s educational and most importantly, It’s not expensive!

When something fails to work as it was designed you begin by asking two very basic questions:  what “is” wrong and what “isn’t” wrong with the device.

The answer to these questions is very valuable indeed.   The answer to the first question obviously identifies the problem.  The answer to the second question hopefully stops an over zealous “Mr. Fix-it” from ripping apart a portion of the device that wasn’t broken to begin with.  Nothing is more discouraging than having completely dismantled something only to learn the problem is elsewhere.

When troubleshooting, a step by step procedure for locating, identifying and solving problems is a valuable resource. A methodical and systematic approach is an absolute time saver.   If it is an electrical or a plumbing problem always start at the source.  If it is a construction related problem, start at the base and work your way up.

For grins and giggles let’s troubleshoot a malfunctioning table lamp.  Just as a side bar keep in mind that table lamps generally come in pairs.  If we can’t fix this one lamp, then we may need to buy two lamps to maintain the balance of the room.   Let’s proceed.

The following 6 step procedure takes less than five minutes and is the same troubleshooting procedure for most electrical devices.

1)      Disconnect the source.  Unplug it!  Inspect the cord for obvious breaks.  Pets are notorious for chewing cords.

2)      Verify the source.   That is, use a basic two wire voltage tester and test for currant in the receptacle. We don’t want to dismantle the lamp only to learn the receptacle was bad.   If you have a Receptacle circuit tester (An inexpensive device that, by a pattern of lights, indicates wiring errors in receptacles) simply plug it into the receptacle.  The code on the device will inform you as to what, if any, problem there may be.

3)      Next, using your continuity tester remove and check the bulb by touching one probe to the tip at the base and the other probe to the threaded side.   It is not uncommon for the tungsten filament to be broken in a new bulb.  If the bulb is good the tester will beep or buzz.

4)      Using a jumper, connect an end to each spade on the plug.  Again, with your continuity tester probe the inside wall of the threaded socket and then touch the other probe to the center where the bulb tip would make contact.  If the tester does not sound off (make a buzz or continuous beep) turn or press the on/off button a few times.  If the continuity tester still fails to make a sound you have just narrowed the problem down to just one of two problems.

5)  Now we can start taking things apart.  A) Gently remove the outer shell of the socket from the base cap.  B) remove the insulating sleeve from the socket thus exposing where the two wires from the cord attach to the socket and visually inspect the connections.   C)  Clamp the continuity tester to the large spade on the plug and then touch the other probe to the silver screw at the base of the socket.  The tester will beep or buzz if the integrity of that side of the cord is good and has no internal breaks.  Now do the same with the small spade of the plug and the brass screw at the bottom of the socket base.

6)  Using the jumper again jump a connection to both spades of the plug.  Again use the continuity tester and touch one probe to the threaded side of the socket and the other probe to the center of the socket and activate the switch until the continuity tester sounds off.  If there is no sound, you have just located a bad switch.  The switch/socket assembly can be purchased at any home improvement center for less than 5 dollars.

Any one of these six steps will locate and identify an electrical problem.  With the exception of step 3 this procedure can be followed to troubleshoot just about any electrical appliance or device.

In lesson two we will put together an inexpensive household electrical tool kit.

How to Make DIY Solar Heating Panels

Making DIY solar heating panels can be pretty simple, as long as you prepare the materials you need for the project. Anyone with average handyman skills should be able to easily complete the task, and special tools are not required.

All you need, in terms of equipment, are:

* a wood saw

* a hacksaw

* a drill

* a screwdriver

* a hammer

* screws

* nails

* a file

* a paintbrush

* a tape measure

Materials you need to procure include the following:

* a 10mm annealed copper tube

* a 16swg aluminum sheet

* glass fiber wool

* a marine-ply sheet

* 4mm glass

* timber for the frame

The copper tubes will be used to bring the water through the collector area. Copper has high thermal conductivity which makes it perfect for the job. It’s available in most plumbers’ shops, and comes in 20m, 25m, and 30m coils.

Once you’ve assembled the copper tubing, you’ll attach it to the blackened absorber plate. It will collect the sun’s heat and transfer it to the copper tubing. It is recommended to use aluminum as an absorber plate because it is cheaper than copper sheets and it is more readily available in most locations.

The absorber plate will be encased inside a wooden frame. It is made from hardwood, with a marine-ply backing sheet. If you want the frame to last longer, have a preservative coating applied to it. This will add a couple of years of service.

The last part of the DIY solar heating panel is the transparent cover. This will prevent heat loss especially during cool weather. Glass is preferable because of its high light-transmission value. If you can’t afford a float glass, acrylic sheeting should be a suitable substitute. The downside of using acrylic sheeting is that it can be prone to scratching and discoloration.

The efficiency of DIY solar heating panels might not be as good as the efficiency of commercially available ones, but they can get good results. And imagine of the savings you can get when you make one. A DIY solar heating panel costs a third the price of a commercial one. Not only that but you’ll be cutting down your energy bill as well if you use it. If constructed right, the panel has a life expectancy of twenty years. There are no moving parts involved, and no maintenance should be required the panel.

Constructing DIY solar heating panels is not complicated and is one of the easier DIY solar power projects. This is one project that you should definitely try if you are interested in setting up DIY solar power equipment or systems. You can use the panel to heat your pool, or to supply your home with hot water.

Wooden Worktops Basic DIY Installation Technique

If you are trying to transform the look of your kitchen by introducing a wooden worktop, you have the right idea. Stylish deco does not have to cost much and there are two major saving opportunities to be made. The first is buying the worktop online and the second which is of course installing the worktop yourself.

Wooden Worktops Basic DIY Installation Technique:

1. Prepare The Tools – Most tools needed should be available in your tool collection, otherwise consider borrowing the other tools to complete the job. The tools required for the installation are power saw, hand saw, jig saw, pencil, clamps, worktop bolts and brackets, drill kit, measuring tape and quality sealant. There could be other tools required depending on your precise circumstances, but most of those should be in tool kit anyway.

2. Prepare The Working Environment – Clear the room of any obstacles which might interfere with the work. The idea is to focus on installing the worktop, not on moving electrical appliances and dishes around.

3. Measure The Surface – If you are replacing an existing worktop and its current location and size are acceptable, simply copy the measurements from the old worktop to the new worktop. If that is not the case, measure the surface and be sure to place extra attention to angles and curves. Once you are happy with the measurement, mark it using a pencil. You might also consider using a template which is widely available nowadays from the wooden worktop supplier.

4. Saw The Worktop - Using either a power or hand saw place the worktop face down to prevent chipping of the wood and saw by following your marking. Take extra care when using a power saw and do not rush this stage of the installation.

5. Make Room For The Sink, Tap and Pipework – Once you have decided where each of them will go, place the worktop upside down and cut into the worktop. To make the cut in the wood the right way, use a 10mm diameter drill bit to make a hole in each corner then use a jig saw to cut between them resulting in a nicely round hole. Now seal the wood around the cut to prevent moisture (sink and tap) and to make the surface heat resistant if installing a hob.

6. Joining The Worktop – Taking the direction of cutter rotation into account, if you need to join two or more planks together use aluminium jointing strips with a silicone sealant. Similar to step 4, take extra care when joining the wood together and do not rush it.

7. Fix The Worktop – Place the worktop in the correct position on top of the kitchen units to check that it is straight and level. Now use a countersunk chipboard screws through the front rails of the units into the underside of the wooden worktop and metal L brackets at the rear.

Enjoy your new worktop!.

Rta Cabinets: Don’t Get Scammed!

Horror stories abound everywhere. Novice DIY Homeowners trying to remodel their kitchen or bathroom who take on a project bigger than they can handle. Remodeling your own kitchen or bathroom can be a very rewarding project and you can save a ton of money, but buying the wrong cabinets can lead to disaster. Home Improvement stores and the name brand manufacturers have done a very good job of selling the accessories and styles of cabinets, while at the same time taking the focus away from what the cabinet is actually made of. Stores like Ikea offer a wide range of RTA cabinets in all of the most popular styles and do a very good job of helping you select everything you will need for your project. What they fail to do is talk about how hard it will be to actually assemble the cabinets or what the box of the cabinet is made of.

A quality cabinet, whether it is a customer cabinet or RTA cabinet, will be constructed of plywood or solid wood. Ikea cabinets and even the pre-assembled cabinets sold at Lowes and Home Depot, are traditionally made of particle board or fiberboard with a veneer or laminated cover. The problem with fiberboard and particle board is that it acts like a sponge when it comes in contact with water, which leads to bubbling or warping. While the face frame and doors of these cabinets may be solid wood, it is the cabinet box that is going to add stability to the cabinet. The other issue with cabinets made of these materials, is that the screws, staples, or nails that are used to hold the cabinets together, have a tendency to lose their grip, since the material is not solid. The combination of all these attributes will significantly shorten the life of your cabinets.

Another issue that DIY Homeowners don’t realize is that not all RTA cabinets are assembled the same way. A quality RTA cabinet will come complete with all of the pieces in one box, with simple assembly instructions, and should only require a screwdriver to assemble. A neighbor of mine thought that she found the kitchen of her dreams at Ikea…. everything was great until she got the cabinets home. Literally every piece came in a separate box (hinges in one box, doors in another box, screws in another box). It literally took her 3 days to layout, and identify all of the different pieces for each cabinet. By the time she got down to the last couple of cabinets, pieces were missing, extra pieces were left… assembling RTA cabinets doesn’t have to be that difficult. I installed RTA cabinets in my kitchen that I bought on-line and it was super easy. Each cabinet showed up in it’s own box, all of the pieces were included. The cabinet locked together using cam locks which only required a screw driver. In 3 hours I was able to assemble the same amount of cabinets that took my neighbor 3 days to layout.

So when considering RTA cabinets for your kitchen or bathroom, don’t fall into the common pitfalls that hundreds of other homeowners have faced when buying the wrong cabinets. Do some research on the cabinets that are available, both on the internet and in the stores. Inspect the materials they are made of, how they are assembled, and finally the overall cost (make sure there are no hidden costs from having to buy extra parts). Don’t get scammed by low grade RTA cabinets.

I was able to save thousands on my kitchen cabinets. Find out my secrets…. you to can save thousands on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities by following these easy steps

DIY Home Improvement For Beginners: The Basics of DIY

DIY or do it yourself is a goal-oriented hobby initiated and completed by individuals or small groups. The basic premise is that if a person learns reasonably fast and knows how to apply basic skills to projects, then the person doesn’t have to hire other people to do the work for him.

In recent years, DIY home improvement has made impact in television and in the hearts of interested homemakers and professionals. The idea of improving the looks of your home using your own basic talent appeals to a lot of people. If you wish to begin your own journey in DIY home improvement, certain things have to be taken into consideration so that you can increase your success rate in any DIY home improvement projects.
The basics of DIY explained:

1.Skill- the acquisition of skill in DIY is self-paced, and depends largely on your enthusiasm for the task at hand. Enthusiasm translates to willingness- the willingness to finish tasks and the willingness to learn. If you’re just beginning with DIY, stick to small, doable projects that you know would be fun for you. Sustaining interest is also one key problem, so if you’re improving your house with your own two hands, make sure that the part of the house that you wish to alter won’t make you miserable after a few days.

2.Knowledge- certain things cannot simply be assumed- and this includes electrical systems and cabinet designs. Read all that you can about what you want to do. Limit yourself to doable ones. Making a table is doable, but replacing your living room’s large chandelier on your own isn’t. Learn, have fun and then go to the next task. This is the formula to successful DIY home improvement projects.

3.Time- let’s face it. DIY home improvement projects need a lot of time. If you can’t find time for the project, then postpone your attempt first. You can reschedule next summer or during the holiday season. This would minimize clutter in your house and cut down waste materials due to expiration dates.

4.Finances- the aim is to save money and enjoy the DIY project. However, there are some DIY projects that require a lot of money. Never sacrifice the integrity and safety of your house by buying substandard yet cheap materials. It doesn’t matter if you save or not. Example, if your roof fails due to thin braces and support trusses then you would be spending a lot more in repairing the damage.
