Bathroom Repair – Money Saver Or Money Pit?
Everybody dreads having to repair their bathroom. Doing it yourself is usually a very messy affair. On the other hand getting a contractor to do it will almost certainly be a very costly project. I always tell you to plan your home improvement projects and bathroom repair is no different. When you remodel or repair your bathroom make sure that you do it right both to increase the value of your home and to make future repairs as easy and inexpensive as possible.
Moisture – The Primary Enemy
Avoiding moisture in the bathroom might seem impossible, but getting rid of it as fast as possible certainly isn’t. You want to get rid of moisture for two reasons.
- In the long run it can be damaging to your bathroom
- More importantly it can cause mold which is damaging to your health and the health of your family.
Any bathroom repair or remodelling project should ensure that moisture can escape your bathroom as easily as possible. A good fan may be noisy and annoying when enjoying your bath, but when it comes to removing moisture from your bathroom its value cannot be underestimated. Also if possible make sure your bathroom has a window. Leaving the window slightly open during your bath will increase the circulation of air and get rid of moisture faster. It may not be how you would prefer to enjoy your bath, but quite frankly it’s a minute sacrifice to preserve your health and your bathroom. Allthough putting in a ventilation system or a new window may seem like huge projects at least they involve areas that are usually very accessible.
You Really Don’t Want To Break Up The Floors Or Remove The Tiles From The Wall
This brings us to the issue of access panels. Imagine this scenario: There’s a leak in one of the pipes in your bathroom wall. To get to the pipes you have to open up your walls. That means breaking down the tiles and digging further into the wall. The cost of making this repair will not be insignificant. That’s why you should get access panels installed when you are making bathroom repairs or remodelling the bathroom. It will probably be more expensive up front, but in the long run it will be a great investment.
So, You’re Telling Me Bathroom Repairs Are A Regular Money Pit
It might seem that way. I can only encourage you to spend a bit more money up front. In the long run it’s bound to be a good investment. You see prevention is not only better than curing, it’s also less expensive. However, as always I will encourage you to seek advice with a professional contractor. They will know which route is the best to go. Having said that, you should make sure you ask more than one contractor.
